TORONTO, July 11, 2001 — Bayer Healthcare donates $25,000 to the ACT Foundation’s national campaign to empower youth to save lives.

The ACT Foundation is committed to a national movement to establish CPR training in high schools across the nation. The program empowers youth with the skills and knowledge to help a parent or grandparent who is experiencing a heart attack, a sibling in a drowning emergency or a schoolmate who chokes. In turn, youth bring their lifesaving skills and heart health knowledge to their present and future families.

The ACT High School CPR Program is now established in several hundred high schools in Canada, and will reach 100,000 youth in 2001. The donation from Bayer Healthcare will support ACT’s goal to expand the program across Canada, ultimately reaching 400,000 students every year.

“Bayer is committed to making a difference in people’s lives and playing an active role in our communities, ” said Philip Blake, General Manager and Executive Vice President of Bayer Healthcare in Canada. “The ACT Foundation’s mission to empower Canada’s youth with lifesaving abilities and awareness about cardiovascular health is an important partnership for Bayer as we share this focus through our current therapies and ongoing research.”

The ACT Foundation is a national non-profit organization dedicated to saving lives through educating Canadians about illnesses which can lead to pre-hospital emergencies. ACT’s corporate health partners are companies in the research-based pharmaceutical industry. They are AstraZeneca, Aventis Pharma, and Pfizer Canada.
